Remembering Nick McGlashan from Deadliest Catch. Cause of Death, Drug addiction.

A 7th-generation fisherman, Nick McGlashan comes from a long line of fishermen. His great uncle, Nick McGlashan, worked on the first boat which is said to have pioneered the U.S. crab industry. The family custom was carried on by generations including Nick’s father, Bruce. While the family mantle had been handed to Nick, Bruce still popped up now and then to see how his son was doing. Given that Bruce and Bill were old friends, it is only natural for Nick to join Bill’s ship. After learning the tricks of the trade from Bill, Nick bought the Summer Bay and became the captain of the fishing vessel. Nick McGlashan was a reality TV star who was featured as a deck boss on Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” for seven years.  He died on December 27, 2020, in Nashville. The cause of death was ruled to be a drug overdose from a mix of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl. 

Early Life:

Nick McGlashan was born on the 1st of August 1987 in Anchorage, Alaska, United States. He is the second child of fisherman Bruce Lanford and June McGlashan. Nick spent his childhood in Atukan, Alaska, and at the age of 13, he moved to Ureka, Montana alongside his father and sister (Mellisa). Nick fell in love with fishing from a young age. He would often accompany his father to the fishing vessel and hang out with the crew. Even when Nick was in high school, he would take all of his homework and work on them on the boat, where the crew would help him during breaks.

Professional Career:

After graduating from high school, Nick knew what he wanted to do. Even though his father had hanged up his fishing boots, Bill was still active in the seas. In 2011, Nick Began working for Wild Bill on the Kodiak. Impressed by his skills, Bill promoted Nick to the position of Deck Boss and refers to Nick as his heart and soul. While Nick can be troubling at times, he has proved his loyalty to Bill. 

In Season 15, Nick sustained an injury just hours before the ship was scheduled to depart. After an X-Ray showed that his ankle was just sprained and not broken, Nick took on some crutches and was back on the boat. Impressed by his determination, Bill commented that the only reason he puts work in Nick is that Nick puts in the work for Bill. 

Problems with drugs, Cancer, and Recovery:

Nick had been struggling with substance abuse for a long time. It reached a point where the Captain found Heroin on Nick’s property. After he was kicked out of the ship in 2013, Nick checked himself into rehab. Talking about his addiction, Nick revealed that not only was he abusing vodka, heroin, and meth, but he also overdosed three times. Nick checked into rehab in September 2016 and tried to remain sober since. Talking about his struggles with substance abuse, Nick revealed,

“To say I was lost would be an understatement,” writes McGlashan. “I was broken and soulless. I was living without any hope of happiness. All I wanted was to stay loaded. Every bit of happiness stripped away by a powerful, cunning, and baffling disease.”

In 2017, the fisherman suffered a lot due to the worst possible health scare anyone could suffer. After visiting the doctor, he got to know that he had a significantly higher white blood cell than normal, a type of Cancer. Doctors were concerned because this was usually the initiation of cancer. Lucky Nick McGlashan did not get cancer. After medication, his health complications stretch all the way back to normal.

Following his recovery, Nick claimed that he was happier and felt inspired. The reality star shared he wanted to inspire others going through the same struggles. 

Deadliest Catch:

Nick McGlashan’s career on Deadliest Catch spanned seven years, from 2013 to 2020. He worked as a deck boss on several boats, including the Cape Caution and the Summer Bay. He was mentored by Captain Bill Wichrowski, who treated him as family. He was known for his great depth of knowledge and his sharp sense of humor.  He also struggled with addiction and was suspended from the boat in Season 13 to deal with his recovery. He inspired others with his sobriety and his passion for fishing. He died shortly before the start of season 17, leaving his fellow crew members in shock and grief. According to IMDB, Nick McGlashan made 86 Deadliest Catch appearances from 2013-2021.

Personal Life:

Nick McGlashan was not married when he was alive. He had a long-time girlfriend named Claire Hammond, who was the mother of his son Kane Wilder Hammond. They lived in Port Townsend, Washington. Nick also had a daughter named Lennyn McGlashan (or Lennyn Richardson) from a previous relationship.  She lived in Unalaska, Alaska with her mother. Nick and Claire had a tumultuous relationship and never got married
